Trial Bay Gaol

Trial Bay Gaol is one of the most significant heritage places on the NSW coast, its ruined granite walls a powerful reminder of its history as a nineteenth-century public works facility and later World War I internment camp. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service engaged Heritas to prepare a detailed Schedule of Conservation Works of the Gatehouse interiors, addressing long-standing problems of moisture ingress, salt contamination and failure of internal wall finishes resulting from the site's harsh coastal exposure. The work involved assessment of the existing masonry and surface treatments, a review of earlier conservation campaigns, and the development of a best-practice methodology for sacrificial render removal, granite substrate desalination and repair of associated finishes, providing a clear staged framework for conservation works and ongoing maintenance that balances the protection of significant fabric with the continued use of the Gatehouse as a visitor facility.
