Engaged by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Heritas prepared a detailed Scope of Works and conservation specification for the storm-damaged interior wall surfaces of the Smoky Cape Lighthouse Lightkeeper's and Assistant Lightkeeper's Cottages, part of a State Heritage Register-listed complex and one of the most elevated lighthouse precincts on the East Coast of Australia. The document addressed the complex history of paint failures within the mass concrete cottages, investigating the causes of delamination, efflorescence and salt damage resulting from the harsh coastal environment, and specifying best-practice conservation treatments including paint removal, wall desalination and limewash reapplication. The scope was informed by specialist advice from Westox Building Products, ensuring the long-term preservation of this significant nineteenth-century maritime heritage precinct.
